Overwater Rooms In Fiji? Where Are They?

Being our first time to visit Fiji, we assumed it would be similar to the Maldives. We are obsessed with the overwater bungalows we’ve stayed in while visiting Maldives, so it was honestly something that was high on our list for Fiji. After doing some research, we realized that Fiji actually does not offer that many Overwater Bungalow stays, and in fact, of the few resorts that offered them, only one or two built their rooms in the water. This is, because, Fiji has different environmental suitability factors to consider such as the tides, stronger currents and much deeper waters. Fiji is very focused on conserving the environment and protecting its ecosystem, including its beautiful corral reefs, so overwater bungalow rooms are not that common. Instead of relaxing in an overwater bungalow as the main feature of your stay, the focus for tourism in Fiji is set on its rich and warm culture, land activities, water activities and its stunning beaches!

Enter Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay into the mix, and you’ve solved your endless search for a luxurious overwater stay while still immersing yourself in the vibrating culture Fiji has to offer! Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay is located in, you guessed it, that calm and protected waters of Momi Bay. It’s about a 50 minute drive from the airport, and is on the Coral Coast of Viti Levu, Fiji. Remember we mentioned that Fiji doesn’t have many overwater rooms located in the water? Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay does offer 22 overwater rooms called, Overwater Lagoon Bures. When asking about overwater bungalows in Fiji, you’ll find that they are referred to as Overwater Bures instead. “Bure” is the Fijian word for traditional house or dwelling, and is characterized by its iconic thatched roof and design. The fact that Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay exclusively built some of their rooms in the water made clicking “book” super easy!

The Overwater Lagoon Bure At Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay: Overview & First Impressions

Ah, the Overwater Lagoon Bure! Our floating home-away-from-home! Our room offered moderate privacy and stunning views. Something to note, is that while Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay is a family-friendly resort, its Overwater Lagoon Bures are adults-only. That doesn’t mean the rest of this resort’s accommodations aren’t worth it! In fact, they left us wanting to come back for more (we’ll get to those rooms a little later). These overwater bures are located at the heart of the resort on Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay. But, not all of the Lagoon Bures face out to the ocean. So, these rooms do not offer the same level of privacy we’ve experienced at other overwater bungalow stays.

Being in the Lagoon: The Pros

But, being in a protected bay at the center of it all has its perks. Aside from the changing tide levels, the water is usually really calm and still. Also, no matter which way your room faces, you always feel like you are a part of the overall atmosphere and energy at Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay! One of the highlights was the little boat that came by on Mondays and Wednesdays (or was it Tuesdays and Thursdays? 🤔 too many cocktails, perhaps 😆) delivering complimentary cocktails to Overwater Lagoon Bure guests! The floating bar turned us into two little kids! When we heard the sound of the davui shell, we quite literally ran onto the balcony to eagerly wait for our treats!

Inside The Overwater Lagoon Bure

As soon as we opened the door to our Overwater Lagoon Bure, we were blown a way by the amount of space inside! Not only is there ample storage throughout, the high ceilings make the room seem even bigger than it already is! The interior is the perfect blend of modern luxury and traditional Fijian decor, creating an inviting atmosphere that felt both exotic and comforting. But, seriously! One of the first things we wanted to do as soon as we walked in was jump on the bed, and it took everything in us to stop ourselves from ruining the beautiful setup with our stinky airplane clothes! The spacious layout featured a plush king-sized bed, a really cozy sitting area, TV, bedside charging ports, a coffee bar, a free-standing tub, vanity, walk-in shower, separate toilet room and large glass sliding doors that opened to a private deck.

A Little In-Room Surprise!

We ultimately thought that our room came with really cool color-changing party lights, but after searching for the remote, we discovered a little secret that took our overwater bure stay to the next level! Each Overwater Lagoon Bure has glass panels the border the walls of the room and look down into the waters of Momi Bay. This is such a cool feature, that actually changes the ambience of the room depending on what time of day it is! You can watch the walls of the room turn shades of green and blue with the day. Even at night, the walls of the overwater bure change color with the water!

But, If you’re looking for even more space, Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay also offers two larger overwater bures called The Royal Overwater Lagoon Bure that provide an extra level of luxury and comfort. These spacious accommodations are ideal for couples that just want and need that extra touch of exclusivity and luxury! Keep in mind that there are only two on property, so while they are gorgeous, you may want to grab yours early to guarantee that room type will be available during your stay. We found that our Lagoon Bure had plenty of space for our wants and needs, and was a nice relaxing escape each day to escape the humidity (because, if you know anything about Fiji, it comes with a strong dose of humidity) or to recharge and take a plunge in Momi Bay.

Let’s Dive In! The Pools At Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay!

The Adult’s-Only Pool: The Sunset Pool

And what’s a tropical getaway without some time by the pool, right? Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay offers three pools— two for everyone and one for adults seeking an extra-serene retreat. Our favorite pool, is the Sunset Pool, that gets its name for the incredible view of the sunset as it seems to take a plunge into the ocean each day right in front of you! The Sunset Pool is an infinity-edge pool with a hot tub, that feels more like a little private beach on the edge of paradise. It’s an adults-only pool, and we never found it to be crowded even given its smaller size. Warning! If you’re checking in early, don’t head to the Sunset Pool…you’ll fall asleep on the cabana beds, and will completely miss the sweet staff searching for you to take you to your room, and assuming you’ve gone missing! True story 😆! Also, our favorite restaurant on the resort is located next to The Sunset Pool, but more on that a little later.

The Main Pools For Everyone

For resort guests of every age, the fun-filled main pool is a vibrant, fun, has music, a bar, a lounge and a separate shallow splash pool where kids can splash around while parents relax nearby. We love this pool too, because it was the closest to our room, it has access to the Lagoon Beach, Lagoon House and Lagoon. We tried to swim to the main pool and Lagoon House from our Overwater Lagoon Bure, but it’s a little further than it looks, so we advise against trying 😆. So, now pick your pool, or don’t! Why choose when you can have both? You’ll likely spend most of your days lounging at the pool and enjoying the view, and good news is, Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay has three spots where you can to take a relax, sip and take a dip!

Fish Bar: Catch of The Day

First up and number 1 at Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, for us… Fish Bar! Fish Bar is a casual yet chic setting located right next to the adults-only Sunset Pool. It also has a bar that pool and restaurant guests can enjoy. Even some of the dining tables are located in the sand that mixes with the Sunset Pool! With the sound of waves in the background, and (if you’re lucky enough to book at the perfect time) a beautiful pink, yellow and orange sunset to top it off, you can savor the freshest catch prepared to absolute perfection. So perfect, in fact, that we decided to dine at Fish bar three times in a row during our stay!

Gigi Kitchen: A Glorious Buffet

Looking for an upscale buffet with just about everything you could want? Head over to Gogi Kitchen, a casual buffet-style dining experience that also serves meals a-la-carte! This 2-in-1 delicious stop is the go-to spot for breakfast, lunch and offers a romantic and chill ambience at night with its tasty menu and views of the interior of Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay and lagoon. We had trouble keeping our plates reasonable, because there was so much to try! But, that’s the point of a buffet, right? The open kitchen design is inviting, and you can find tastes from Fiji and all over the world. The local fruit is a must-try and the self-serve mimosa bar is most definitely a favorite with guests.

Lagoon House: A Poolside Escape

We like to call this spot a place to unwind while you’re unwinding 😆! Lagoon House an upscale, but relaxed lounge that offers an extensive cocktail menu and delicious pasta and pizza for lunch and dinner. Just like Fish Bar at the adult’s only Sunset Pool, Lagoon House has a bar that pool guests can also access, but, what makes it unique is that it’s also a swim-up bar! We lounged here quite a bit while looking out onto the sparkling lagoon. We loved catching the music and just the listening to the lagoon and breeze. It’s a quick walk from the Overwater Lagoon Bures, so we became stop-in regulars.

Voi Voi Bar: Your Fijian Hangout

Voi Voi Bar is located behind the Family Pool and Lagoon House on the lush green area! Here, you can find more laid back BBQ style lunch offerings as well as delicious craft beverages and local and imported beer selections. The open air and relaxed atmosphere is so inviting! We were a bit disappointed to only have stopped in once, but it was most definitely worth it! During the day, you can also visit to discover locals and their handmade goods brought to the resort for admiring and purchase if you choose. Keep in mind that this is a lunch-only spot, so make sure to take a break from the water to steal some time at Voi Voi Bar.

Fiji Baking Company & Lagoon Lounge: More Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay Treats

Two more delicious stop-ins at Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay are Fiji Baking Company and Lagoon Lounge! Grab a really quick snack, baked goods or even some ice cream at Fiji Baking company, and then take a quick lounge break at Lagoon Lounge on your way to the Sunset Pool and sip on your favorite cocktail or try something new! If you’re a sports fan, you can also catch a local game if you’re lucky enough. The Lagoon Lounge was our first stop after losing track of time at the Sunset Pool, and became our little secret hideaway! That was just how we felt about it, since it’s tucked away just a little stroll down from the main lobby area, but it was always quiet and we almost always had the entire lounge to ourselves! We highly recommend grabbing a delicious sandwich, and then stopping in for a few of your favorite drinks at Lagoon Lounge for a quick mid-day snack.

The Spa and The Gym: More Adult Playground Space, Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay

They are neighbors and offer a little bit of everting you need! The Quan Spa and the gym at Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, are located close to the Overwater Lagoon Bures (and, if you can guess, we LOVED that), and close to the water sports area as well where you can rent water sports equipment or take that surf lesson you’ve been trading for relaxing in a cabana. So, a little confession… we didn’t use the gym 😆. We gad every intention of being well-behaved and visiting the treadmill and having a date with a pair of weights once daily, but…the view from our Overwater Lagoon Bure scheduled other plans for us each morning, plus Quan Spa was just way too tempting to pass up.

Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay truly is a place for all, even the tiniest travelers! We loved seeing all the happy kids living life to the fullest, and we decided that we wished we had reverse I.D.s so that we could join in the fun, haha! From Turtle Kids Club where kids can join in activities like art competitions, practicing their Fijian, basket weaving classes and making new friends, to the Kids Marine Biology Program, Momi Eco Warriors Program, Pizza Classes, kids pool, playground and so much more; you’re kids will have too much to do during their stay!
